Game Drives in Akagera National Park – Classic Game Safaris in Akagera
Nothing beats dawn game safaris in Akagera National Park when predators are still active and antelope stand alert in the amber light. Professional guides choose loops based on recent movements, balancing open plains for cheetah-like vantage scanning (even if cheetahs aren’t present, the tactic finds lions and leopards) with woodland edges where shy species emerge. These game drives in Akagera National Park use radio-free, ethical guiding and linger respectfully at sightings so you can watch natural behavior unfold. Expect to meet wildlife in Akagera across every ridge: stately giraffes silhouetted on hills, skittish oribi and reedbuck in the grass, and massive cape buffalo cooling in muddy wallows.
Boat Safaris in Akagera National Park – Lake Safaris on Lake Ihema
For a different angle, boat safaris in Akagera National Park glide across Lake Ihema, a prime vantage point for elephants that wade at the edges, pods of yawning hippos, and Nile crocodiles sunning on banks. These relaxed lake safaris in Akagera National Park are a birder’s dream, with African fish eagles calling, shoebill storks possible in nearby marshes, and vibrant kingfishers flashing along the reeds. Cruising Lake Ihema in Akagera National Park at sunset paints the water bronze and draws wildlife to drink, giving you serene portraits and mirror-like reflections. Pair a morning game drive with an afternoon boat to maximize diversity in a single day.

The gorilla trek exceeding my expectations. Our driver and guide, Christian, did a great job of navigating busy traffic to get us safely to and from Volcanoes National Park. He managed the gorilla permits and park fees so we did not have to think about it. The trek was the adventure of a lifetime! The expert guide and gorilla trackers found our gorilla family right away and primed us on how to behave. Porters were friendly and available to carry bags and provide assistance as needed.
